Back to Fernando de Noronha

I was in Fernando de Noronha for the last time in 2004. It was the last from a series of 8 visits to the island in order to finish my book “Fernando de Noronha Terra e Água” published at end of that year. Since then I was busy with other projects and didn’t had a chance to go back. The opportunity rose in June this year, when friend and photographer Fernando Clark planned to visit to the island to finish his upcoming photo book.

The island has changed little in these past seven years. There are new hotels and restaurants, more places have now restricted access, general road and local streets conditions have deteriorated. It’s hard to say if there have been any change in conditions underwater. From what I could gather it remains the same, without any noticeable degradation even on fragile environments like Praia do Atalaia (Atalaia’s Beach).

And even after 8 visits the island is still able to astonish me. During  less than  a week period I was there I managed to photograph more than 15 different species of fish and crustaceans that I didn’t take pictures on the previous trips. I also took pictures for the first time of the famous “Sancho Waterfall”, a rare sight that occurs when there is a lot of rain in the island. I did all my dives with Atlantis, they have a very professional and friendly staff. That’s the dive operator I recommend to all my friends who visit Fernando de Noronha.

Here are some photos from my last trip to Fernando de Noronha.
